High Tea on the Lawns of St Leonard’s Gate

Following the grand success of the Carnival of Culture in March there will
be a follow up event entitled “High Tea on the Lawns of St Leonard’s Gate“
on Friday 29th August.

The event organisers are looking for local people of any age, background
or beliefs to come and join us for a couple of hours of good old Victorian
fun and frivolity on the last remaining lawns of St Leonard’s Gate. Help
them to transform this space into a vision of how we would like it to look. Bring
your ideas, inspiration, deckchairs, plants, top hats and tales of how
Lancaster used to look. Enjoy free scones, cucumber sandwiches and cups of
earl grey tea cup of earl grey. Play croquet on the lawns. Marvel at the
wonder of Lancaster’s creative talent. Take a moment to dream of how you
would like our lovely city to look in the future.

When asked why the event was taking place one of the organisers, William
Ashton, had this to say, “we are growing incredibly concerned about the
nature of so called “development” that is taking place in Lancaster today.
From the monstrous carbunkle that is the old Kingsway bath site to the
numerous empty shops and new built “city pads” that spoil our lovely city.
The recently submitted Centros plans will undoubtedly be another nail in
Lancaster’s coffin and will leave and indelible negative mark on the local
landscape for generations to come. In fact the Victorians had much better
taste when it came to development with their beautiful architecture and
other influences such as the city garden. Maybe it’s time that we try and
learn from the past and stop such grave mistakes from happening in the
future?”.

All local people are invited to get involved and come down on the day with
their children, neighbours, grandparents, friends. Even if you approve of
the latest Centros plans then please come down and talk to us about why
you feel this way. Everyone will be welcome. Secondly, performers of any
ilk are needed to perform their poetry, songs, rants, warblings etc on the
small bandstand that will be erected. We would be especially happy to
hear performances that highlighted peoples feelings about the city of
Lancaster and its future.

New Lancaster skylines

Dear all.

As a further spur to sending in objections I have attached some syline
images taken from Centros Environment Statement. . The red line
indicates a minumum height and the black line indicates maximum. You
will see the scale of the proposed development . If the outline
planning applications get passed by Planning Committee there is nothing
to stop Centros going for maximum heights further down the line.

Centros are about to resubmit their proposals to the council. we wanted to make sure Centros and the council don’t think we’ve all gone back to bed, so we’ve organised a little party to reawaken the carnival spirit…
